KS2 Maths: Using and Applying Test Revision Guide
Two invaluable books to address the greater emphasis on using and applying maths in KS2 SATs from 2003.

The books use a radical approach to help Y6 children solve the type of more complex problems which come under the umbrella of 'using and applying' in maths.

Pupils' Book
This book arms pupils with a range of strategies to tackle 'word' and other problems found in the maths SATs tests:
  • Five sections, one for each Numeracy Strategy strand (Number, Calculations, Solving Problems, Handling Data and Measures, Shape & Space)
  • General rules for solving problems
  • Table showing maths content for each strand and the types of questions relating to it
  • Two test-style questions each with three examples of pupil's answers at different levels, broken down to show how marks can be won and lost.
  • Detailed explanations of how to answer the questions.
  • Exercises based on developing effective problem-answering strategies
  • Test tips.
Teachers' Book
The Teachers' book, complements the pupils' book and includes the following:
  • Copymasters with 78 SATs-style 'using & applying' questions, linked to the 5 NNS sections
  • SATs-style mark scheme
  • Pupil book answers

"What I particularly like is the inclusion of SATs-type questions with children's answers. Overall, I think that the book will reflect a need beyond just another SATs book - this goes one step further and offers, at last, actual strategies and meaningful guidance."
